Suspected Maoists set fire to two road construction equipment in Odisha's Kandhamal district on Tuesday in protest of the state's three-tier panchayat elections, police said.

On Monday night, the event occurred in Kiamunda village, which is under the authority of the Phiringia Police Station. According to P Shyamsundar Rao, the Inspector-in-Charge of Phiringia Police Station, the construction work was done by a private company.

The ultras, believed to be members of the banned CPI (MaoistKalahandi-Kandhamal-Boudh-Nayagarh )'s (KKBN) division, arrived at the construction site around midnight and set fire to the equipment, according to police. Rao said he saw some hand-written Maoist posters at the scene, with a call to the locals to boycott the next panchayat polls, the removal of CRPF camps in the area and the district, and adequate salary payment to labourers.
