Bhubaneswar: The owners of outdated vehicles that were registered before April 1, 2019, have been urged by the Odisha transport authorities to affix High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) before the deadline to avoid a fee.

The deadline for vehicles with an Odisha registration mark and a registration number that ends in 1, 2, 3, or 4 is September 30, 2022, and the deadlines for vehicles with registration marks and numbers that end in 5 and 6 and 7 and 8 are October 31, and November 30, respectively. Similar to this, owners of vehicles with an Odisha registration mark and a registration number that ends in 9 or 0 must install the HSRP by December 31, 2022.

Dipti Ranjan Patra, a joint commissioner for transportation, warned that if the owners of the vehicles do not replace the current number plates with HRPS before the deadlines mentioned above, e-challans will be issued against the offending vehicle and will result in a fine of Rs 5000 or Rs 10,000 under Section 192 of the MV Act, 1988.

As of August 24, 2022, 7,06,215 car owners had reserved spaces, and 4,08,680 of those vehicles had HSRP installed, according to him.

Old licence plates are simple to alter and can be used as a weapon by thieves. The HSRP plates, however, are challenging to replace because they include a non-removable snap-lock. According to him, these plates have two non-reusable locks and are tamper-proof.

According to directives from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), all classes of old vehicles that were registered before April 1, 2019, must have HSRPs attached as of June 1, 2022.

The HSRP is mandatory for all new vehicles registered on or after April 1, 2019.
