NEW DELHI: Official language Hindi received a boost after Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose Hindi as the government's official language in 2014, officials said, and this has boosted Hindi's relevance. They claimed that now the time has come to make the Official Language an integral part of the country's unification.

They added that more emphasis is being placed on Hindi these days, and officials have been pushed to adopt it as the language of communication for all government communications and day-to-day operations.

According to the officials, all Ministers and Prime Minister Modi speak to officials in Hindi, and all government releases are written in Hindi before being translated into English. Officials claimed that the present Official Language Committee's rate of activity had never been witnessed before, and that this was reflected in the government's functioning.

According to a government source, about 65 percent of official work is done in the Official Language in all Central Government Public Sector Units and Banks, although the number is slightly lower in Ministries.

Apart from celebrating "Rajbhasha Pakhwara" every year for two weeks on September 14, the government has established a number of rewards and economic incentives to encourage the use of official languages. The public sector banks and central public sector undertakings have reaped the benefits of these incentives in large numbers.
