Officials claim that US intelligence helped Ukraine kill Russian generals

WASHINGTON: According to senior American sources, the US has provided intelligence about Russian troops that has allowed Ukrainians to target and kill many of the Russian generals who have died in action in the Ukraine war.

Military analysts have been surprised by the number of generals killed on the front lines, according to Ukrainian officials.

The targeted assistance is part of the Biden administration's classified attempt to support Ukraine with real-time battlefield intelligence. According to the officials, the intelligence also includes expected Russian force deployments obtained from recent American evaluations of Moscow's secret battle plan for the conflict in eastern Ukraine's Donbas region. Officials refused to say how many generals were murdered as a result of American aid.

The US has concentrated on sharing information about the Russian military's mobile headquarters, which move around frequently. Ukrainian officials have used such geographic information, together with their own intelligence (such as intercepted communications alerting the Ukrainian military to the presence of key Russian officers) to carry out artillery strikes and other actions that have killed Russian officers.

The intelligence sharing is part of a stepped-up flow of US assistance that includes heavier weapons and tens of billions of dollars in aid, revealing how rapidly early American limitations on backing for Ukraine have evolved as the war enters a new stage that might last months.
