LOS ANGELES: According to data provided Tuesday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the BA.2 sub-lineage of the Omicron variant currently accounts for around 35% of new Covid-19 infections in the US.

This figure is up from 22.3 percent a week ago and 15.8 percent two weeks ago.  According to the data fromUS Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the BA.2 variant is gradually spreading across the country, with illnesses tripling in less than two weeks. Despite the fact that the original Omicron type still accounts for the majority of Covid-19 infections in the country, its prevalence has fallen to 57.3 percent in the week ending March 19.

Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease specialist, said that  BA.2 will cause "an uptick in cases," but not a major surge like other varieties have.

On Sunday, Fauci told ABC that the new strain is 50 to 60 percent more transmissible than the original Omicron strain, and that it might become the prevalent form in the United States.
