LONDON: According to British health authorities, another 90 cases of the new Omicron Covid type have been detected in the UK, bringing the total number of cases to 336. There are 64 new cases in England, 23 new cases in Scotland, and three new cases in Wales. According to sources, there have been no verified Omicron cases in Northern Ireland.

Professor Paul Hunter of the University of East Anglia, an infectious disease expert, told the BBC that the Omicron variation might begin "outcompeting" the dominant Delta type within weeks. He says the new version is "growing rather faster than the Delta variant," and that officials in South Africa, where the mutation was initially discovered, have reported a "rapid" spike in cases.

According to official numbers issued on Monday, 51,459 new Covid-19 infections were registered in the United Kingdom, raising the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 10,515,239 cases.  A total of 41 people died as a result of the coronavirus in the country. The overall number of deaths caused by the coronavirus in the United Kingdom has now reached 145,646. Only persons who died within 28 days of their first positive test are included in these statistics.
