New Delhi: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday called upon the country to completely reject Macaulay's education policy. He said the government is accused of saffronising education, but what is wrong with saffron? Thomas Babington Macaulay was a British historian who played a major role in the beginning of English as a medium of instruction in India.

In his address after inaugurating the South Asian Institute of Peace and Reconciliation at Dev Sanskriti University, Haridwar, the Vice President said Indians should give up their colonial mindset and learn to be proud of their Indian identity. Naidu also said that the Indianisation of the education system is at the heart of India's new education policy, which emphasises on promoting mother tongues. "We are accused of saffronising education, but then what is wrong with saffron?

The Vice President said that centuries of colonial rule taught us to see ourselves as a weak race. We were taught to despise our culture, our traditional wisdom. It slowed down our growth as a nation. The introduction of a foreign language as a means of our education limited education. A small section of society is depriving a large population of the right to education. Naidu said that we should feel proud of our heritage, our culture, our ancestors. We must go back to our roots. We must abandon our colonial mindset and teach our children to be proud of their Indian identity. Whatever Indian languages there are, we should learn. We should love our mother tongue. We must learn Sanskrit to know our scriptures, which is a treasure trove of knowledge.
