In the year 2000, the Mahakumbh of the Games was started in Sydney. India left for Sydney with a total of 65 athletes for the Olympics, of which 44 were male players and 21 were female players. At that time, when the Indian team toured Australia, it could hardly win 1 or 2 matches. Something similar happened in the recent Sydney Olympics. However, India's account in these Olympic Games, which lasted from September 15 to October 1, started on the fourth day itself.

Born in a small village of Vousavanipeta in Andhra Pradesh, The family members of Malleswari never thought that this girl would one day bring laurels not only to her but to the whole of India. At the age of just 12, under the tutelage of coach Nallamshetty Appanna, Malleswari started training in weightlifting. Karnam Malleswari's talent was recognised by 'Arjuna Award' winning chief national coach Shyamlal Salwan when she went to the Bangalore camp in 1990 with her elder sister. It was only from here that her love for sports woke up and she was completely absorbed in the game, her struggle brought color and in just one year, she came into the race for the Indian team.

In 1993, Malleswari finished third at the World Championships and then again finished third in 1996 with a series of world titles in the 54kg division in 1994 and 1995. She also won two silvers at the 1994 and 1998 Asian Games and was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999.
