Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said, the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) will ensure that small shops have an equal opportunity to engage with major enterprises, secure their businesses, and serve customers with contemporary delivery systems.

At an entrepreneurship event, he stated that India is leading the globe in the development of digital public infrastructure. ONDC is to e-commerce in India what UPI is to digital payments. It will allow buyers and sellers to be digitally visible and trade via an open network, regardless of the platform or application they use.

"The ONDC team is working to democratise e-commerce so that millions of small mom-and-pop stores across the country, as well as small retailers, do not perish as they have in the West, but have an equal opportunity to engage using digital technologies to protect, grow, and serve their customers with modern delivery methods," he said.

On December 31, 2021, ONDC got its certificate of formation as a private sector non-profit organisation.
