New Delhi: The public is troubled by the rising prices of petrol and diesel these days, with the rising prices of vegetables from above making the lives of the common people miserable. Onion prices are now gearing up to cry after rising tomato prices. Onion prices in the wholesale market have more than doubled in the last one month.

Traders say onions will remain expensive this festive season and are not expected to get relief in prices before January. Heavy rains in many onion producing areas of the country have caused severe damage to the summer crop of onion and delayed sowing of winter crop. It may be recalled that earlier there were reports of a lot of increase in tomato prices. In Kolkata, tomatoes have reached a price of Rs 93 per kg in the retail market.

According to media reports, the wholesale price of onion in Lasalgaon, Maharashtra's major producer area, has almost doubled to Rs 33,400 per tonne in a month. Retail prices of onions in Mumbai have also gone up above Rs 50 per kg. Onion exports are still open, but if prices continue to rise like this, the government can again ban exports.
