NEW DELHI: During the Budget session on Monday, the Leader of Opposition criticized the Narendra Modi government over allegations of a paper leak in the NEET exams. The opposition leader expressed widespread concern among Indian students who believe that money can influence the country’s examination system.
“There is a growing sentiment among millions in India that our examination system is compromised. People think that if you are wealthy, you can manipulate the system,” the opposition leader stated.
He emphasized that the issue extends beyond the NEET exams and affects all major examinations in India. “It’s clear that there are serious problems with our examination system,” he added.
The opposition leader also criticized Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, accusing him of deflecting responsibility. “He seems to be oblivious to the fundamental issues at hand,” the leader remarked.
In the meantime, the Supreme Court has been reviewing petitions related to the NEET-UG 2024 controversy. The Chief Justice of India noted that, according to petitioners, the paper leak incident likely occurred around May 4. However, he acknowledged that no evidence has been found of a widespread paper leak. A counsel for NEET-UG aspirants informed the court that the National Testing Agency (NTA) admitted to a paper leak and the distribution of the leaked questions via WhatsApp.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan assured the Lok Sabha that no evidence of paper leaks has been found in the last seven years. “Over 240 exams were conducted by the NTA in the past seven years, with more than 5 crore students applying and over 4 crore participating. There have been some incidents, and this case is currently under the Supreme Court’s review,” Pradhan said.
