In Goa, opposition parties criticized CM Pramod Sawant's decision to reintroduce the controversial bill on 'Bhumiputras' in the upcoming assembly session, alleging that the state government "killed democracy". Addressing the people of Goa on Tuesday, Sawant said that considering the sentiments of the people, the name of the "Bhumiputra Adhikarini Bill" will now be changed to the "Land Rights Bill" and will be reintroduced in the next session of the Assembly in the next two months.

The Goa Assembly had last week passed the Goa Bhumiputra Adhikarini Bill, 2021, which provides for ownership rights to 'Bhumiputras' living in small residential units. Several categories had raised objections to the present nature of the Bill after which Sawant had stated that from 4th August, the Bill would be available for suggestions of the people.

The CM said the bill will be beneficial for the people of Goa and rejected suggestions from opposition members that it was brought with the aim of pleasing the migrant 'vote bank'. The Congress leader tweeted on Tuesday, "On the first day of the last assembly session, I had mentioned that the BJP government has killed democracy in the temple of democracy. The lies of the Goa CM have now come to light. Truth always triumphs. Satyamev Jayate.”
