CPI-M MP John Brittas has requested urgent support from the Defence, Home, and Finance Ministries to address the crisis.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar expressed his concern over the tragic loss of life and acknowledged the efforts of both the central and state governments to tackle the situation.
Union Minister JP Nadda assured the Rajya Sabha that the central government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is actively involved in the relief efforts. He emphasized that the situation is a national concern and that the government is collaborating with the state to manage the crisis.
“Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the Government of India is committed to providing all necessary support for the relief operations in Kerala. The PM has personally spoken with the Kerala Chief Minister to ensure that all required assistance is being provided,” Nadda stated.
Nadda also noted that central agencies are on-site, working alongside state authorities. The immediate focus is on recovering bodies and rescuing survivors, with efforts underway to activate the Emergency Response System.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced that he would request the Home Ministry to present a detailed statement in Parliament. He confirmed that Minister of State George Kurien was dispatched to Kerala by the Prime Minister to assess the situation. Rijiju also reported that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), and armed forces have been deployed.
Kerala Minister MB Rajesh confirmed the death toll of 44 in the landslides, which struck the Meppadi area in the early hours of Tuesday. He noted that 250 people have been rescued and relocated to temporary shelters, with rescue operations being conducted urgently. The Chief Minister is closely monitoring the situation and has sent a team of ministers to Wayanad.
The landslides have impacted Meppadi, Mundakkal Town, and Chooralmala areas. The state health minister reported that rescue teams, medical supplies, and health workers have been sent to Vythiri, Mananthawadi, Kalpetta, and Meppadi government hospitals.
The Kerala Chief Minister’s office has established a control room to provide immediate relief and assistance. Additionally, the Department of Information and Public Relations (PRD) has set up district and state-level media control rooms to offer official updates around the clock.
