Odisha: Elephant falls into pit, forest department rescues with the help of JCB

Bhubaneswar: An elephant was rescued in a midnight operation in Odisha. According to the forest department, the elephant had fallen into a pit in Tembatola village of Bangiriposhi range. The forest department said they first came to know about the wild elephant falling into the pit from the local, after which forest department personnel rushed to the spot and with the help of JCB the elephant was pulled out of the pit.

Wildlife researcher Anumitra Acharya said, 'An elephant was rescued from a pit late on Saturday night near Tembatola village in Mayurbhanj. In fact on Saturday a group of elephants had entered a village. As soon as people started running away, one of them fell into the pit.' The forest department said that 8-10 elephants had entered Tembatola village from Shimlipal forest. Seeing the herd of elephants roaming in the village, locals started fleeing and a sub-adult wild elephant fell into a pit in the middle of the village amidst the stampede.

He explained that he tried to get out for several hours to get stuck in the pit but could not get out. The villagers immediately informed the Bangiriposhi forest department. The forest department carried out the rescue operation. The elephant is now reported to be in a nearby forest.
