Naomi Osaka defeated Sloane Stephens 3.6, 6.1, 6.2 to advance to the second round of the BNP Paribus Open tennis. After trailing 2.0 in the third set, Osaka returned with three breakpoints and has won the match within 2 hours. In this set, she broke Stephen's serve three times.

Osaka is playing here for the first time since 2019. She has not played a single tournament so far since losing the last 32 at the Australian Open in January. Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, withdrew from the French Open last year due to mental health reasons.

Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva, Daria Seville and Tereja Martinakova also won the first round. In the men's category, MacKenzie McDonald, Jenson Brooksby, Jack Sok and J J Wolff of the United States have also advanced to the next round.
