The Board of Governors of The Academy has recently announced significant changes to the theatrical release criteria for films aiming to qualify for the Best Picture Oscar. These revised regulations, set to take effect from the 2025 ceremony, will have a profound impact on the eligibility requirements for this prestigious award.

Under the updated guidelines, movies will no longer be eligible for the Best Picture Oscar based solely on a one-week theatrical release in an approved city. Instead, a more extensive duration of exhibition in theaters will be necessary to meet the revised eligibility criteria. Filmmakers must now ensure their films comply with the following requirements:

1. Expanded Theatrical Run in Top US Markets- To be considered for nomination and potential victory in the Best Picture category, a film must have an expanded theatrical run of seven days, consecutive or non-consecutive, in at least 10 of the top 50 US markets. This expanded run must take place no later than 45 days after the initial release in 2024.

2. Release Plans for Late-In-The-Year Films - For films released later in the year with expansions occurring after January 10, 2025, distributors are obligated to submit release plans to the Academy for verification. These plans should outline the intended expanded theatrical run, as described in point 1, and must be completed no later than January 24, 2025.

3. Non-US Territory Releases - Non-US territory releases can contribute to meeting the criteria for two of the required 10 markets. The qualifying non-US markets consist of the top 15 international theatrical markets, in addition to the film's home territory.

Due to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Oscars had temporarily waived their eligibility rules for theatrical releases, acknowledging the widespread shutdowns and challenges faced by the film industry. However, it is important to note that the recently approved changes to the theatrical release requirements for the Best Picture Oscar will not affect any films competing for the award in the 2023 calendar year.

Aspiring filmmakers and industry professionals must take note of the revised theatrical release criteria for the Best Picture Oscar. These changes, set to be implemented from January 1, 2025, will require films to have a more extended and strategic presence in theaters to be considered for this highly coveted accolade. By adapting to these new regulations, filmmakers can enhance their chances of securing a nomination and ultimately competing for the prestigious Best Picture statuette.
