At least 15 Rohingya refugees were killed when a boat capsized in the Bay of Bengal while trying to illegally travel to Malaysia near South Bangladesh on Tuesday, a Bangladesh Coast Guard official has confirmed. 77 people have been rescued, while 40 others are missing. Coast Guard media officer Lt. Hayat Ibna Siddiqui said the accident occurred after a stone collided with a boat near St Martin's Island at around 7 am.

Coast Guard Commander Naeem-ul-Haq said that so far 15 bodies have been found, 70 people have been rescued. He said that Coast Guard boats near St. Martin's Island are still on the hunt. More than 700,000 Rohingyas who fled after being overwhelmed by military action in Myanmar in 2017, are trying to leave Bangladesh's refugee camps and go to Malaysia by sea.

After the investigation, it is being told that most of the victims are women of Teknaf of Cox's Bazar and Ukhia Apijila in various Rohingya camps. Coast Guard media officer Lt. Commander M. Hameedul Islam said at least 300 people started the journey to Monakhali on Monday night. Death toll may increase further.
