Chennai: On Friday, September 13th, more than 100 people, including 40 children, fell ill after eating chicken biryani served at an event organized by Tamil Nadu’s ruling party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The attendees, who were lured to the event with food tokens distributed by DMK party workers, experienced severe symptoms including vomiting and nausea shortly after consuming the food.

The incident occurred during a general membership meeting and welfare distribution ceremony held in Villur, Kallikkudi taluk, Madurai district. The event, presided over by Madurai South District Secretary Manimaran, involved distributing over a thousand food tokens the day before to attract participants. Following the meeting, attendees were given chicken biryani in silver plates and plastic containers, with some taking it home to share with their families.

Symptoms began to surface around 8 PM, prompting the use of 10 ambulances to transport the affected individuals to the Villur Primary Healthcare Centre and other nearby facilities. Hospital sources indicated that the illnesses were caused by stale food, leading to food poisoning.

Thirumangalam Police have launched an investigation into the incident, with further inquiries ongoing. This event follows another recent tragedy in Tamil Nadu, where 65 people died and 118 were hospitalized due to a hooch tragedy in Kallakurichi district in June 2024.
