The illegal arrival of a large number of Sri Lankan nationals into Tamil Nadu has put a question mark on the country's porous coastal region, especially the work of the Tamil Nadu Coast Guard and other Indian agencies. Because after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, the Coast Guard and other Indian agencies have increased vigil on the coast.

Tamil Nadu Q Branch police have found that over 100 Sri Lankan nationals have entered the state through the Thoothukudi coast, following the arrest and interrogation of a suspect in an illegal immigration racket. Suspect Starwin, who was questioned by the elite Q branch of Tamil Nadu police, said the people had arrived in Thoothukudi from Sri Lanka in five batches and the arrival was in country boats.

Starwin, who was arrested on Saturday, 18 September, is believed to have played a key role in facilitating the illegal migration of Tamil Sri Lankans into India through the Thoothukudi route. Coast Guard and Tamil Nadu Police have beefed up vigil in coastal towns and villages along the Tamil Nadu coastline to prevent further entry of Sri Lankan Tamils into the country. Sri Lankan nationals paid huge sums of money to two Tamil agents, Ashok Kumar and Kasivavanathan, on the promise that they would be provided with lucrative jobs in Canada. Coast Guard and Tamil Nadu Police have been tasked to increase vigil at night to prevent any untoward activity along the coast.
