Over 115,000 Users Leave 'X' After Trump's 2024 Election Win: A Major Social Media Shift?

Following the confirmation of Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 US Presidential election, social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) saw a significant drop in its user base, marking the largest departure since Elon Musk's acquisition of the platform in 2022. Many users shifted to other platforms like Bluesky.

The day after the election, over 115,000 US users deactivated their X accounts, according to data from Similarweb. This figure only reflects account deactivations via the platform’s website and does not account for mobile app deactivations.

This mass exodus coincides with Musk’s active involvement in the election and the increasing popularity of Bluesky, which saw its user count rise sharply to 15 million, thanks to an impressive addition of one million new users each week.

Recent research pointed to a rise in toxic and sexist language on X, including terms like "your body, my choice." Changes Musk had implemented, such as reducing moderation, reinstating banned accounts, and allowing users with extremist content, have reportedly hurt the platform's advertising revenue.

Notable figures have also left the platform. Journalists such as Charlie Warzel, Mara Gay from The New York Times, and former CNN anchor Don Lemon recently announced their departure to Bluesky.

The Guardian, a leading British news outlet, revealed it would cease posting from its official accounts on X. The publication cited concerns over Musk’s involvement in the US Presidential election, calling X “a toxic media platform” used to sway political discourse. In its official statement, The Guardian also expressed concern about the disturbing content promoted on X, including far-right conspiracy theories and racism.

Although The Guardian will stop posting from its official accounts, the publication clarified that its journalists may still use X for news gathering. However, X will now play a reduced role in promoting The Guardian's content. Users can still share The Guardian's articles, but the platform will no longer be a primary outlet for the publication's posts.
