Gangtok: The weather in the northeastern city of Sikkim has been continuously worsening, leading to severe flooding of roads, landslides, and the collapse of houses. This has disrupted the mobile network, making it difficult to contact those trapped. The entire city is facing a scene of devastation, and rescue operations are ongoing to safely evacuate the stranded tourists.

According to an official statement, if the weather remains favorable, more than 1,200 tourists stranded in the Mangan district of Sikkim could be evacuated today, Sunday. Sikkim's Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister, Tshering Thendup Bhutia, is closely monitoring the rescue efforts. The statement issued on Saturday evening mentioned that if weather conditions stabilize, the evacuation of tourists from Lachung via airlift and road would begin on Sunday.

Tourism and Civil Aviation Secretary CS Rao reported that the continuous rains have wreaked havoc, severely damaging roads and cutting off communication. Rao noted that approximately 1,215 tourists, including 15 foreigners, have been stranded in Lachung for the past week.

Officials have confirmed that at least six people have died due to the relentless downpour in Sikkim. The district administration has provided compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the affected families. The entire city has suffered significant loss of life and property. Persistent rain has caused widespread darkness, with power lines down in many areas, resulting in power outages. Heavy rains have also disrupted mobile networks, complicating efforts to contact those stranded.
