Kochi: Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan has approved a law for which the Kerala government has now come under the Congress target. Former Union Minister and veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram has said that he is very surprised at the decision of the LDF government that the person can be sentenced to five years for posting so-called 'derogatory' posts on social media.
Obviously, the opposition of the Kerala government is strongly opposing this decision. The opposition argues that freedom of expression is being taken away by bringing this ordinance. Earlier on Saturday, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan approved the Kerala Police Act Amendment Ordinance of the CPM-led LDF government. The state cabinet had last month said to strengthen the Police Act by recommending the inclusion of section 118-A.
According to the new amendment, if a person posts a post through social media with the intention of insulting or defaming someone, he can be jailed for three years or fined up to Rs 10,000 or both.
