NEW DELHI: Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu became the first Indian to win the BWF World Championships, crushing Japan's Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-7 in just 38 minutes in a one-sided final on Sunday. With this win, Sindhu has become the first Indian to win a gold medal in the World Championships. She has previously won silver in 2017 and 2018 at the Badminton World Championships and bronze medals in 2013 and 2014 and has five medals.
In the BWF Badminton World Championships, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Sports Minister Kiran Rijiju have congratulated Indian women badminton star PV Sindhu for winning the historic gold medal. In a tweet, Prime Minister Modi said, The stupendously talented @Pvsindhu1 makes India proud again! Congratulations to her for winning the Gold at the BWF World Championships. The passion and dedication with which she’s pursued badminton is inspiring. PV Sindhu’s success will inspire generations of players."
On the other hand, Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju,told ANI, "Today is a big day for India. PV Sindhu has created a history. She has won the World Championships in the badminton. This is not only for the badminton but for the Indian sports a big big day,"
