Panama Papers have unveiled the illegality of many politicians and other renowned persons. One of the names that were highlighted there was Nawaz Sharif, the former Prime Minister of India. After Pakistan’s Supreme Court verdict on the leaked papers, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed references against ousted PM and his family for corruption.
The recent verdict that was announced by the Pakistan court after many halts is quite unfavorable for him and his kin. The alleged corrupted politician is sentenced for 10 years and her daughter Maryam Nawaz punished for seven years jail term by Judge Mohammad Bashir. Capt Safdar, Sharif’s son-in-law who was absent while hearing as he was busy in the election campaign at hometown Mansehra.
The trio were accused of converting illegal earnings into legal by buying foreign assets including luxury flats in Avenfield House, on London's Park Lane. Court have announced the verdict on Avenfield House. Notably, the family is facing three corruption cases in the accountability case.
Amjad Pervez, Maryam Nawaz counsel before the hearing reportedly expressed that he is expecting a favourable order from the court end. On questioning about where the Capt Safdar is, he reported that he is not in contact with him and have no information that he will attend the hearing or not.
Notably, Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz were in London since 14th June as Kulsoom Nawa, the former first lady of Pakistan is under intensive care. On Monday, the father-daughter were exempted for two days and asked to be sure that they will attend today’s hearing. The Pakistani Muslim League (PML-N) leader asked to delay the hearing as wants to hear it in person.
Avenfield corruption case hearing was a important part of Sharif’s life but no other leader from PML-N leader have reported his presence except Dr. Asif Kirmani. It is expected that after this imprisonment Sharif’s party would get affected badly and can face worse result in upcoming elections.
