Islamabad: A Pakistani high court has ordered the Foreign Secretary on Thursday to produce country's former PM Nawaz Sharif before the court on September 22. The Lahore High Court had allowed 70-year-old Sharif to go abroad for four weeks for treatment, after which Sharif has been in London since November last year.

Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Mohammad Safdar were found guilty in the Avonfield properties case on June 6, 2018. Nawaz Sharif was also sentenced to seven years in jail in December 2018 in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills case, but was released on bail in both cases and was also allowed to go London for treatment. The Islamabad High Court had on Tuesday issued a non-bailable warrant against the former PM.

Pakistan's PM Imran Khan, on the other hand, has said that it was a  mistake to allow former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to leave the country and go Britain for treatment and his government is sorry for the decision. Sharif had filed an affidavit in the court citing his history of following law and order and said that he would return to Pakistan within four weeks or when doctors declared him healthy, but he has not yet returned.
