New Delhi: The rift in relations between India and Pakistan has persisted for many years. When Shehbaz Sharif came to power, it was expected that the new government would talk about improving relations, but Shehbaz Sharif made constant statements that kept the relationship away. Amid the crisis, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Thursday pitched for improving relations with India. On the re-linking of ties with India, he said that severing ties with New Delhi will not serve the good of the country as Islamabad is already isolated and displaced internationally.

Addressing the foundation day programme of the Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad, Bilawal said, "We have some issues with India. There is a long history of war conflict between Pakistan and India. He said that the events of August 2019 cannot be taken lightly. On August 5, 2019, the Government of India revoked Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. Since then, the distance between India and Pakistan has increased. Soon after, Pakistan expelled the Indian envoy.

On the Kashmir issue, Bilawal said, "This is the cornerstone of any conversation I have had since I became the External Affairs Minister. Bilawal asked those present at the event, "Is it in our interest to break ties with India, will it serve our purpose, whether it is Kashmir, whether it is growing Islamophobia, the new regime in India and the Hindutva authoritarian nature of the government?" We have practically cut off the relationship. Is this fulfilling our purpose?" Bilawal Bhutto said, "As external affairs minister, I am not only able to talk to the Government of India as a representative of my country, but also to the people of India and is this the best way to fulfil the objectives of Pakistan?" But when the ceasefire was renewed, there was some hope of improving the relationship. The ceasefire is still on, but both sides are not able to agree to take the next step to resume the talks. Meanwhile, Bilawal Bhutto's statement has given new hope.
