Islamabad: Pakistan's Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad says his country is not setting up a new camp to provide shelter to Afghan refugees trying to flee Afghanistan. According to media reports, Rasheed said there are no Afghan refugees on the border and the government has not set up any camps in the area.

Rasheed had visited the Torakham border on Sunday where he made the statement. There are already about three million Afghan refugees in the country and there were reports that people were gathering on the border and trying to enter Pakistan. According to officials, nearly half of the refugees living in Pakistan are living illegally because they have not registered themselves. About 1.5 million refugees have officially registered themselves. They have papers to live, employ, and cross the border.

Pakistan has been saying it will not accept more refugees since the Taliban captured Afghanistan. But his Ministers are making contradictory statements in this regard. The Home Minister has taken a tough stand on the issue while Information Minister Fawad Chaudhary said last week that there will be softness on women and children. No explanation has been issued yet.
