BEIJING: Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhao Lijian announced on Monday that China will send more humanitarian aid, including 25,000 tents, to flood-ravaged Pakistan.
According to Zhao, the Pakistan Red Crescent Society will also receive an emergency cash assistance payment of USD $300,000 from the Red Cross Society of China.
Zhao claimed that the decision to increase humanitarian aid was made in light of the potential for disaster development as well as Pakistan's need for disaster relief.
China and Pakistan are true friends, good brothers who share both prosperity and hardship, and all-weather strategic cooperative partners.
Zhao said China has been concerned about the people of Pakistan ever since the floods started wreaking havoc in the country and that State Counselor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi sent his condolences to Pakistan's Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
China has provided 4,000 tents, 50,000 blankets and 50,000 pieces of waterproof canvas as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
"We will never forget that Pakistan came to our aid immediately after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (in China) and sent all its tents to stock in the affected area, which deeply touched the Chinese people," Zhao said. We support people. The people of Pakistan, who are also our brothers, in this flood situation."
He announced that China would increase its assistance to Pakistan in fighting floods and post-disaster reconstruction, as well as their cooperation on disaster mitigation and prevention.
To raise funds, the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan and the Pakistani Embassy in China are approaching appropriate businesses and industry sectors. He further said that he hoped that the Pakistani people would survive the floods and rebuild their country quickly.
