Islamabad: As per the media report today, Pakistan's Election Commission has stated that it will be unable to organise general elections within three months due to legal, constitutional, and logistical challenges.

Pakistan's ailing Prime Minister Imran Khan startled the opposition on Sunday by recommending hasty elections within three months, just minutes after the National Assembly's deputy speaker dropped a no-confidence motion against him. Imran Khan then persuaded Pakistan President Arif Alvi to dissolve the National Assembly, which had a total of 342-members.

The hearing on the deputy speaker's decision to reject the no-confidence move against Prime Minister Khan, who had lost a majority in the lower house of Parliament, was deferred by Pakistan's Supreme Court on Monday.

According to Pakistan's Dawn media, a senior official of the Election Commission stated that the preparations for the general elections would take six months due to fresh delimitation of constituencies, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the number of seats was increased under the 26th Amendment, and bringing district-and constituency-wise electoral rolls in conformity.

"Delimitation is a time-consuming operation," the report said, quoting the official. "The law provides for one month simply to invite objections." According to the official, inviting bids and reviewing financial and technical quotations will take time. He estimated that two million stamp pads would be needed for about 100,000 voting stations when it came to election materials.
