Jerusalem: Two Palestinians were killed on Thursday during an Israeli military raid on a terrorist stronghold in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

According to Israeli media reports, the two men killed were commanders of the terrorist organization Islamic Jihad. The men were identified by the Palestinian Ministry of Health as 27-year-old Naeem Jamal Zubaidi and 26-year-old Mohammad Ayman Saadi, but it was not clear whether they were terrorists.

The army was reportedly riddled with bullets during an arrest raid in the city of Jenin. In retaliatory action, the army killed two people.

An inquiry for comment was not immediately responded to by the Israeli military. The army has been conducting arrest raids in the West Bank for months, following a wave of deadly Palestinian attacks on Israelis in the spring.

The Israeli military claims the raids are aimed at destroying terrorist networks and preventing further attacks, but the Palestinians claim they only serve to strengthen Israel's ongoing occupation and weaken their own security forces.

The raid escalated hostilities between Israelis and Palestinians, triggering a new round of Palestinian attacks that have resulted in eight more deaths in recent weeks.

This year, more than 130 Palestinians have died, making 2022 the deadliest year since 2006. However, local youth who resisted the incursion, as well as others who were not involved in the violence, have also been killed, according to the Israeli military, which claims many of those killed were militants.

In the 1967 Middle East conflict, Israel took control of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip. The Palestinians want those territories for the eventual state they hope to establish.
