Huwara: In an incident that police described as a stabbing but a Palestinian official described as a fight, Israeli police shot and killed a Palestinian in the occupied West Bank on Friday.

According to Israeli police, in the city of Huwara, several suspects reportedly approached border guards before one "pulled out a knife and stabbed one of them".

The Palestinian was killed after guards "shot and neutralized a suspect," police said in a statement, before confirming to AFP.

The northern West Bank town of Huwara, which lies on the main road south of Nablus, is regularly patrolled by the Israeli army.
Wajeh Odeh, a member of the Huwara municipality, told AFP that there had been a "quarrel" before the shootings.

Odeh claimed that an Israeli soldier pinned the Palestinian to the ground before shooting him.

Following the incident, heavily armed border guards were deployed along the road, according to an AFP journalist present.
In a statement to AFP, the Palestinian Red Crescent said one of its medical staff members "was prevented from treating an injured person who was later pronounced dead."

According to Israeli police, one of its officers suffered only minor injuries. Nine Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since Tuesday, mostly in clashes with Israeli forces or in raids. The shooting is the ninth such death. In one incident, a man was shot dead after allegedly hitting a soldier with his car.

The international community is concerned about the recent spike in violence in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Tor Vansland, the UN envoy for Middle East peace, warned on Monday that the situation in the West Bank was "reaching the boiling point".

At least 145 Palestinians and 26 Israelis have been killed so far this year in the West Bank, Israel and the disputed city of Jerusalem.
Since the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel has controlled the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

According to Hadi Amr, US Representative for Palestinian Affairs, Washington is "deeply aware of the tragic loss of life" in the Palestinian territories.

Israeli soldiers, Palestinian terrorists and a large number of civilians have been killed recently. In just three days of fighting between Israeli and Palestinian militants in August, 49 people from Gaza were killed.
