RAMALLAH:  Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has urged Israel to implement the agreements it signed with Palestine and to restart the seven-year-old Middle East peace process. On Tuesday, Abbas met with Yael Lempert, Acting Assistant Secretary of the US State Department's Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Abbas updated Lempert on the latest developments in the Palestinian territories, focusing on Israel's unilateral actions against Palestinians, which undermine the world's support for a two-state solution.  Abbas told Lempert that it is critical to halt Israeli actions and implement the agreements reached between the two sides in order to launch a genuine political process based on international resolutions.

Abbas' meeting with Lempert came just one day before his meeting with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, who arrived in Israel on Tuesday to discuss a variety of issues, including the resumption of the stalled peace process. Direct peace talks between Israel and Palestine were suspended in late March 2014 due to deep disagreements over issues such as Jewish settlements and the recognition of a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders.
