Kolkata: West Bengal's Mamata Banerjee government has banned tobacco or nicotine-mixed gutkha, pan masala. According to the Bengal government's rule, gutkha, pan masala will be banned from being made, kept and sold. This rule will come into effect from November 7 and will remain in effect for the next year. The government will then consider taking it forward. An order in this regard has been issued by the Food Safety Commissioner of Bengal.

West Bengal has become the new state to ban gutkha. Earlier, there have been restrictions on selling nicotine-mixed gutkha or pan masala in many provinces of the country. However, due to lax administrative action, this rule is recorded only on paper and from Panwari to big shopkeepers sell such pan masala in a big way. States, where gutkha and pan masala are banned, include states like Uttarakhand, Bihar, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. These restrictions are first for 1 year which is later extended.

The Uttarakhand government had also decided to completely ban gutkha and pan masala in 2019. Like Bengal, this ban of Uttarakhand was also for 1 year. Almost all states make rules for a year and are later extended. In Uttarakhand, the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of nicotine-containing gutkha, pan masala and any other name was banned for up to one year from the date of issue of the order.
