Chennai: Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK Coordinator O.Panneerselvam urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday to follow the lead of other states in lowering the value-added tax (VAT) on gasoline and diesel by Rs 7 per litre. If not Rs 7 per litre, Panneerselvam believes Stalin should reduce the VAT on petrol by Rs 2/litre and diesel by Rs 4/litre so that the DMK can keep its election promise.

The excise duty on petrol and diesel has been reduced by Rs 5/litre and Rs 10/litre, respectively, according to the AIADMK leader. Following the reduction in excise duty by the central government, several state governments have reduced the VAT on petrol and diesel by Rs 7/litre, lowering prices, according to Panneerselvam. People in Tamil Nadu are dissatisfied with the Tamil Nadu government's silence on the issue, especially since several states have cut the VAT on both fuels, he said.

Panneerselvam noted that the DMK promised in its election manifesto to reduce petrol and diesel prices by Rs 5 and Rs 4 per litre, respectively, and that the government has only reduced petrol prices by Rs 3/litre while remaining silent on diesel prices.
