Attention parents! If you smoke, there's a chance you could have an impact on your children, as a recent study conducted in London found that teens are more likely to attempt e-cigarettes if their parents smoke.

According to study that was presented at the European Respiratory Society International Congress in Barcelona, Spain, youths who had smoking-related parents were around 55 percent more likely to have attempted e-cigarettes than they were to have tried smoking, on the other hand.

"We need to continue keeping an eye on the situation in Ireland and around the world because we can see that the number of teens smoking e-cigarettes is changing quickly. We also plan to study social media to understand how this influences girls' and boys' vaping behavior "said University College Cork professor Joan Hanafin, the primary author.

They also found that although boys are more likely to use e-cigarettes, the rate of usage among girls is rising more quickly and that the percentage of people who have tried them has been rising drastically.

For the study, the team looked at data on 6,216 8-year-old children, including details on whether or not their parents smoked when they were youngsters. We asked the teenagers if they smoked or used e-cigarettes.

With information on more than 10,000 Irish teenagers (aged 16 to 17), the team also combined several Irish data sets to provide the most comprehensive analysis of teen e-cigarette use in Ireland. The team looked at the overall numbers of teenagers who try or regularly use e-cigarettes as well as how this is changing over time.

This indicated a rise in the percentage of people who had tried e-cigarettes, from 23 percent in 2014 to 39 percent in 2019.  Teenagers said they first used e-cigarettes out of curiosity (66 percent) and because their friends were vaping (29 per cent). Just 3 percent of people stated they wanted to stop smoking.

When they first tried e-cigarettes, 68 percent of them indicated they had never used tobacco, up from 32 percent in 2015.
