Parliament lasted until midnight to discuss railways, has made a unique record

NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha on Thursday set a new record by continuing its proceedings for more than 12 hours to discuss the demands of the Railway Ministry. The discussion ended two minutes before midnight on the issue. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Praharlad Joshi said on Friday that the discussion lasted till midnight as each member wanted to be a part of it.

Joshi said that it was the first time in 18 years that the lower house was functioning for so long. He said more than 100 members participated in the discussion. "Undoubtedly, it was a record." during the debate, the opposition alleged that the Centre sold its property instead of developing the railway. While the government argued that the capital expenditure had doubled at the time of the UPA Government.

Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Nationalist Congress Party (Rankpa), Dravid Munnetra Kashgam (DMK) and other opposition parties accused the Railways of attempting to "privatize". The bullet train did not escape the opposition attack and faced criticism. Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angdi defended the government by interrupting and told the Lok Sabha that a lot of development has taken place under the leadership of PM Modi.
