NEW DELHI: On the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed a series of adjournments, triggered by the solemn obituary references paid to departed members. The proceedings began with Lok Sabha being adjourned until 2 pm, and Rajya Sabha until 12 noon.

During the session, Sushil Kumar Rinku, an AAP leader, was sworn in as a member of the Lok Sabha, representing Jalandhar in Punjab. He took the oath in his mother tongue, Punjabi, adding a touch of diversity to the parliamentary proceedings.

The solemnity of the occasion was further emphasized when Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, read out obituary references to honor the memory of two sitting members and eleven former members who had passed away during the inter-session period. The House observed a moment of silence as a mark of respect for the departed souls.

In Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Singh Dhankar paid homage to the recently deceased sitting member, Hardwar Dubey, and other former members who had passed away during the break. Once again, the House stood in silence to remember these esteemed colleagues.

The monsoon session was not without its share of pressing issues and demands from the opposition members. They had submitted adjournment motion notices in both Houses of Parliament, urging discussions on various matters, including the situation in Manipur.

Prior to the commencement of the session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his optimism, urging MPs to actively participate in debates and discussions on issues concerning public welfare. He emphasized that in-depth discussions lead to better outcomes for the benefit of the public.

PM Modi also highlighted the importance of certain bills, including the personal data protection bill. Moreover, he addressed the disturbing incident of ethnic violence in Manipur, where two women were paraded naked, expressing his anguish and assuring that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

In the wake of such reprehensible incidents, the Prime Minister urged all chief ministers to prioritize and enhance law and order to ensure the safety and dignity of women, transcending political considerations. The nation must unite in the pursuit of preserving a woman's honor, setting aside partisan interests.

As the monsoon session unfolds, the nation awaits the outcomes of these discussions and deliberations, hoping for fruitful decisions that benefit the public at large.
