New Delhi: The social media platform was summoned by a parliamentary committee on Friday amid ongoing clashes between the government and Twitter over the new IT rules of the central government. The committee was led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. Apart from Tharoor, Mahua Moitra, Nishikant Dubey, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Tejashwi Surya, Sanjay Seth, Zafar Islam, Subhash Chandra and Jayydev Galla were present in the meeting.

On behalf of micro blogging sites, Twitter India's public policy manager Shagufta Kamran and legal adviser Ayushi Kapoor presented their case before the parliamentary committee. The committee asked several tough questions from Twitter, which was summoned on the issue of misuse of platforms and protecting citizens' rights. When the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the New IT Rules of the Central Government asked Twitter whether it follows the rules and regulations of the country, it said it only follows its own policies.

According to the report, the Parliamentary Committee, slamming Twitter, asked simply 'why they should not be fined for violating India's laws'. At the same time, the Parliamentary Committee has categorically told the US company that the law of the country is paramount and not its policy. Twitter has to follow the law of the country. Sources said, there is a consensus in the Parliamentary Committee that Twitter should appoint a Chief Compliance Officer in compliance with the IT Act. According to sources, it is learnt that the Parliamentary Committee had asked a number of tough questions on Twitter to which it could not answer.
