NEW DELHI: Less than a week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's strong advocacy for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country, a high-level Parliamentary standing committee has scheduled a meeting to discuss this matter. The committee, led by BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Modi, focuses on personnel, public grievances, law, and justice, and the discussion is set to take place at 3 p.m.

Sushil Modi has previously mentioned that the panel intends to gather input from stakeholders on this topic. Representatives from the department of legal affairs, legislative department, and the Law Commission of India have been extended invitations to attend the meeting.

The UCC seeks to establish and enforce personal laws that are applicable to all citizens, irrespective of their religion, sex, gender, or sexual orientation. Currently, the personal laws of different communities are governed by their respective religious scriptures. Despite the ongoing examination of the uniform civil code by the 22nd Law Commission, the Parliamentary panel has called for further discussion on the subject.

On June 14, the 22nd Law Commission invited the public and recognized religious organizations to share their opinions and ideas regarding the uniform civil code. The commission is accepting public input on this matter until July 14.

The Uniform Civil Code is a concept that proposes the application of a single set of civil laws to govern personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption for all citizens, regardless of their religious or cultural background. It aims to promote equality, social justice, and harmonious coexistence among diverse communities within a country.

The implementation of a Uniform Civil Code is often considered a significant step towards a more secular and modern society. It seeks to replace the existing personal laws, which are based on religious practices and customs, with a unified set of laws that are uniform and consistent across the nation.
