On the new Indian passports, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, while clarifying the lotus mark, said that the lotus is the national flower of the country. The Lotus issue on passport was also raised in the Lok Sabha where Congress MP MK Raghavan called it another step towards 'saffronisation' and questioned the government. After this, the Ministry of External Affairs has given a clarification, but is Kamal really the national flower of India?

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ravish Kumar gave this clarification in his press conference on this matter. He said, 'This symbol is our national flower&is part of the enhanced security features to identify fake passports.Apart from lotus, other national symbols will be used on rotation.Symbols are connected with India.'

In his statement, the spokesman further said, "And these security features, which are new security features, have been brought in accordance with the guidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). And let me also tell that apart from lotus, there are other national symbols which will be used in turn. Like a tiger symbol. If there is a lotus now, then something else will come next month, then something else will come… All these symbols will keep coming without any definite order. It has all the same symbols that are associated with India. Just like the national flower can be, the national animal can be. '
