P.Chidambaram files anticipatory bail plea in Aircel-Macis case, hearing tomorrow

Former Union minister P Chidambaram files anticipatory bail in the Aircel-Maxis case. He moved to Delhi court seeking anticipatory bail. Special CBI judge OP Saini will hear the matter.  

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had filed a new charge sheet against 18 people at the Patiala High court including P. Chidambaram and his son.

The CBI is instigating the case and as of how the former Minister Chidambaram granted the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval to a foreign firm. P. Chidambaram was the finance minister in 2006 and he granted the FIPB approval to a foreign firm when only CCEA has the power to approve. Chidambaram role has come under the scanner of investigating agencies in Aircel-Maxis of Rs. 3,500 crore.

The CBI alleged that Chidambaram had granted FIPB approval in March 2006 to Global Communication Services Holdings Ltd which is a subsidiary of Maxis. In the charge sheet filed earlier in the case against former telecom minister Dayanudhi Maran and his brothers Kalanithi Maran.

Both Karti and Chidambaram have denied allegations against them by ED and CBI. The agency opposed the bail application in its written submission and sought time to argue. The ED said that it has reached to the bonafide conclusion that under anticipatory bail, it will not be possible to reach the truth. However, it has been decided that Delhi high will hear P Chidambaram’s anticipatory bail plea tomorrow.
