Washington: Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi cautioned New York Magazine on Monday that the United States would cease to exist if former President Donald Trump were to take office again.

The reporter questioned Pelosi about the possibility of Trump winning the presidency once more. "Don't even think of that," Pelosi pleaded. "Don't imagine the world burning up. The United States of America won't exist if it does, she insisted.

"If he were to be president, it would be a criminal enterprise in the White House," the former speaker told the publication.

Pelosi took credit for the idea of the January 6 Commission, which was established following the Capitol riot to look into the extent of the former president's guilt in the incident, and congratulated herself profusely for foreseeing that Trump would act out following his defeat in 2020.

She said of Trump and January 6, "I know he committed a crime that day," bragging that she had known as soon as the riot broke out that the former president was responsible for the day's events despite admitting she could not predict "what can be proven" in court.

The Democrat's remarks came in response to a post on Trump's Truth Social platform in which he referred to her as a "sick & demented psycho who will someday live in HELL." Following his indictment on numerous conspiracy charges in connection with his challenge of the 2020 election results, Pelosi had referred to him as a "scared puppy" on television. She had also described the charges to New York as "beautiful and intricate" with "a better chance of conviction than anything that I would come up with."

Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) warned last week that there was a "very real possibility" that Donald Trump would be found guilty, speaking for many of the former president's supporters, noting that "the facts don't matter, the laws don't matter: they hate him." Cruz warned that the US had "entered banana republic territory" and that Tanya Chutkan, the judge assigned to the case, had handed down sentences to January 6 defendants that were even harsher than those sought by the prosecution.

Despite earning an annual salary that never went over $223,500 while serving as House speaker, Pelosi and her husband are thought to have a combined net worth of over $200 million. Many people, including House Republicans, have accused her of using insider information obtained from her husband's stock trades to amass that wealth, particularly after the couple made $5.3 million off of one trade in 2021, just before a pivotal vote by the House Judiciary Committee.
