As the Iraq armed forces have tighten their hold on the rebel-held areas in Syria thousands of people fled. According to UN humanitarian coordinator in Iraq, people already suffering from scarcity of food and electricity are "now facing water shortage".

"Nearly half a million civilians, already struggling to feed themselves day to day, are now without access to clean drinking water. The impact on children, women and families will be catastrophic," he added on Wednesday.

During the struggle a major water pipeline was destroyed, as reported by the UN children's agency UNICEF. It also added, "Unless running water is restored in the next days, civilians will be forced to resort to unsafe water sources, exposing children to the risk of waterborne diseases such as severe diarrhea and the threat of malnutrition".

Since October 17th, the war is on and many residents have left but still more than a million are staying.
