New Delhi: Supreme Court lawyer and BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay has demanded from the Election Commission that the election symbols of political parties be removed from the ballot paper and EVM machine. Ashwini Upadhyay has filed a petition in the Election Commission demanding that the name, photo and educational qualification of the candidates should be known instead of the election symbol of the parties on the ballot paper and EVM machine. He said that if this happens, every candidate will be treated equally.

In a 21-page petition filed in the Election Commission, Ashwini Upadhyay has asked the Chief Election Commissioner to use the powers of Article 324 to remove the election symbol of the parties from EVMs. He has said that it is necessary for free and fair elections. Upadhyay believes that now independent candidates have to face losses from those contesting elections on the symbol of major parties.

Upadhyay says that election-free EVMs will not only help voters identify candidates who are honest, hard-working, competent and dedicated to the public but will also get help to finish 'criminalization, casteism, sectarianism, linguism, regionalism, dynasticism and dynasticism'  from politics.
