Petrol bombs hurled at Meghalaya CM's residence

Shillong: Two Molotov cocktail bottles that consisted of highly inflammable substances were hurled at CM Sangma's residence at around 10:15 pm, on Sunday night. Reportedly, the unidentified attackers were driving a car near the premises of chief minister Sangma's residence which is located near 'Third Mile'. According to the police, the first Molotov cocktail bottle was hurled at the front of the CM's residence and the second one was thrown behind the backyard. Reportedly, no casualties were reported during the incident. Amid these circumstances of curfew, the heinous attack took place amid a tense situation which according to the Meghalaya government, is a gross violation of Section 144.

The East Khasi Hills district would be under Section 144 with the effect from 8 pm on Sunday following a massive surge in violent protests in Shillong against the killing of former HNLC leader Chesterfield Thangkhiew. It may be mentioned that, following the crisis, the state government has suspended internet services for the next 48 hours in four districts of the state. The districts where the mobile internet services were suspended include East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, and Ri-Bhoi district.

Meanwhile, according to an order implied by Home Secretary CVD Diengdoh on Sunday East, Khasi Hills district deputy commissioner imposed curfew in Shillong Agglomeration till 5 am of August 17 or until further order. In the heart of the crisis, Meghalaya home minister Lahkmen Rymbui had submitted his resignation on Sunday.
