For the first time, this week the PGIMER has conducted a simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant of a 32-year-old woman from Ludhiana.

According to PGI doctors, the transplant was performed on May 27 and the patient is stable now and the recipient was also diabetic.

Dr Ashish Sharma, Additional Professor, Department of Renal Transplant Surgery said, “This is a very rare because it was simultaneously done and pancreas and kidneys were transplanted into the patient. The PGI has done this for the first time”.

Doctors took nearly seven hours to complete the operation.

Against the total number of 250 organ donations in 2015, the PGI this year has already done 100 organ donations (Cadaveric and living).

The patient was in need of two organs and after now, after the successful transplant, the patient will be discharged from the hospital on Tuesday.
