As the fourth phase of Lok Sabha elections unfolds across 96 constituencies in nine States and one Union Territory, early reports indicate a voter turnout of over 40% by 1 p.m. However, sporadic incidents of violence have marred the process in parts of Bengal.

Reports from Andhra Pradesh signal instances of violence, while Uttar Pradesh witnesses some villages boycotting the polls. Additionally, technical glitches with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have been reported in certain booths in West Bengal and Odisha.

The Election Commission highlights a stark contrast in voter turnout, with Jammu and Kashmir recording the lowest percentage at 14.94% until 11 a.m., and West Bengal leading with 32.78%.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasizes the importance of voting to fortify India's democracy, urging citizens to participate enthusiastically. Concurrently, Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coincide with the Lok Sabha polls, prompting Mr. Modi and leaders like Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi to urge high voter turnout.

Phase 4 polling commenced at 7 a.m. on May 13 and will conclude at 6 p.m. Across 10 States and Union Territories, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Jammu and Kashmir, 96 seats are up for grabs.

Moreover, Andhra Pradesh conducts State Assembly elections concurrently with 28 Legislative Assembly seats in Odisha also going to the polls on Monday.
