Pitru Paksha starts during the Purnima Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada and it ends on the Amavasya Tithi of Krishna Paksha. It is believed that the rituals performed during this period helps our ancestors' souls to attain moksh or salvation.

The period of Pitru Paksha is the time when Shraadh rituals of the elderly and all those who left this world are performed. It is said that by offering food and performing Tarpan, the souls of our dead ancestors attains peace, thereby bestowing their blessings on the family.

Food play an important part of the Shradha, which is why food prepared for the family is first served to the crows and then to the priests. In fact, the crow is also associated with Lord Yama the keeper of Pitrulok. It is believed that these rituals are essential to ensure the deceased embark the next journey of their life. Food is important but there are certain items that should not be made and consumer during Sharadha.

Due to these characteristics, they can produce heat in the body. Some ayurvedic experts suggest that onions and other Tamasic food items should not be consumed during the any auspicious occasion.

Wheat and Pulse: This is also a  shocking one but raw grains are prohibited during the holy period of Shradh. Rice , pulses, and wheat should not be eaten during this period. It is considered forbidden to consume these food items uncooked. Vegetables such as potatoes, arbi, and radish are also forbidden.
