In keeping the fight against plastic waste, Indian Railways will install plastic bottle blasting machines at 2,000 railway stations across the country. A senior railway official associated with the cleaning of the stations said, "When plastic and especially plastic bottles have become a big threat to the environment, we are taking stringent measures to spread awareness about tackling the plastics crisis." Drinks and drinking water bottles are drowned in large numbers on stations throughout the country. According to the 2009 report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), about 6,289 tonnes of plastic waste is extracted on the Indian Railways track.

Crushers (plastic bottle blasting machines) are being set up to stop the plastic bottles thrown in the railway track or station premises. Crusher machines will be installed on the platform and drainage door so that passengers who are going to throw their bottles can put it in the machine and destroy them. According to the volume of a plastic bottle inserted into the machine, the machine will start automatically and start functioning. The bottles inserted into the machine will be turned into small pieces. Plastics pieces will be sent to plastic manufacturers.

The official said, "In the first phase, 70 divisions of all 16 zones have been directed to install crusher machines at 2000 stations." Plastic bottles are currently destroyed by hand. Rail passengers or residents of illegal settlements around the station need to stop the litter from throwing them on the track. Railway has given responsibility to 'Rights' responsibility for project management consulting to select agencies to set up and maintain crushers. Small stations will be taken under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), then major stations will be billed. A successful bidder will be given an eight-year contract to improve the technique from time to time.
