New Delhi: A petition has been filed in the apex court seeking to make Sanskrit as the national language of the country. According to reports, the PIL has been filed by KG Vanzara, former Additional Secretary to the Government of Gujarat, who is currently a lawyer in the Gujarat High Court. The petition calls for the Supreme Court to notify the Central Government to make Sanskrit as the national language of India and to keep Hindi as its official language.
Vanjara claimed in his petition that the national language status would be higher than the official language status for Hindi. The petition states that this notification can be done by an act or executive order without dissolving the constitutional framework. The petition states that the official language is not necessarily given the same status as the national language, the two can certainly be different. The petition states that India should learn from Israel, which in the year 1948 also put Hebrew with English as the official / national language, a dead language for the last 2000 years.
Vanzara also said that this step will not face any religion or caste opposition. The argument states that Sanskrit enhances brain, rhythmic pronunciation and memorization ability in children. According to the petition, "Even the former PM had said that the greatest treasure that India has and its best heritage, I would say without hesitation that it is the literature of Sanskrit language."
